Yoo-hoo again

Altered image of “Black Jaguar” by Shanaaz Suliman on ArtStation.

Do you remember the article I wrote on titling your poems?

I have posted it on my brand new Medium page. So, go and give it a(nother) read. I would be so grateful!

I haven’t quite figured out how Medium works, but I’m not in the partner program (yet), so the article should be freely accessible to anyone, even those who don’t have a Medium membership?!

If anyone would like to comment here, and explain the ins and outs of Medium, that would be a great help. Thanks!

  1. I haven’t got a Medium account, though I should maybe do that given the number of people I’m following there, but I do know you need one to applaud and to comment. I was able to get to your page freely but they only give readers 3 free ones a month (you can get clever about the paywall by using RSS aggregators like the Old Reader). The quest for the perfect platform continues! I’m selfishly glad that you’re experimenting so I don’t have to. 😂 I have trouble keeping up; someone I know just dumped Patreon for Ghost and I’d never even heard of it before!

    • Oh, so Medium puts my writing behind a paywall, even if I’m not a member yet? Hmmm! I thought it would be free to read for everyone.

I have to get to 100 followers before I can apply to become a member (and earn from claps and views). What I like about Medium though is that it can get me new readers. Medium articles always comes up in Google searches, so new readers can find me this way.

Ghost looks interesting, but a bit more complicated than I’m willing to commit to at the moment. I like that it’s a non-profit very much. But it does mean your subscription fee goes to funding super-trendy workplaces and exotic trips for their staff, as well as just regular running costs. Just check their website! And if you’re not making money, you still have to pay them. And you need to build your own ‘audience’.

At least Patreon is free, as long as you don’t make any money. But if you earn good money there, Patreon takes a large chunk. And again, it’s the ‘build your own audience’ part that I don’t like. It’s too much like hard work.

I just want to make it easier for people to find my work. So I guess that Medium is the best choice. For now anyway.
